It is my pleasure to have your child in my class and I look forward to meeting you. I will maintain consistent communication with you throughout the school year in order to keep you well informed of your child's progress and development.
Your child will be required to maintain a daily school agenda that will be used to record homework and assignments that need to be completed. I will provide the dates of tests and the due dates of major assignments at least one week prior to the deadline so that your child has ample time to study and complete his or her work. I will communicate these dates to you through the class website (Agenda) and through your child’s agenda.
In Mathematics, we will be starting off the year with a unit on numeration and number sense. We will be talking about place value and working with numbers from the thousandths up to the millions. This unit will serve as a review of concepts taught in the previous year and will incorporate new essential skills that will be imperative to each student's development in mathematics throughout the upcoming school year. As a family, you could visit the MATH section of www.mrmacsclass.ca to play some of the free math games that are offered.
The Language Arts Program will start with an introduction to R.O.P.E.S. and Literature Circles. Effectively integrating ROPES and Literature Circles into the Language Arts Program right away will help improve writing and reading comprehension throughout the year. Some of the roles within a Literature Circle are: The Word Wizard, The Connector, The Discussion Director, The Illustrator, The Passage Master, and The Summarizer. These are terms that will be heard throughout the school year within the program. For more information you can visit eworkshop.on.ca.
As soon as the due dates for assignments are set, I will convey them to you through your child's agenda and through our class website. Please help your child meet their deadlines.
Students are expected to complete any work that was not finished in class for the next day. All students should be reading for 20 minutes a night and also playing educational games on the class website for 20 minutes a night, even if it says, "No Homework!" I am a firm believer in the fact that a student must have a life outside of school and I do not want to over burden my class with work so that they cannot enjoy activities and sports outside of school. I will do my best to make sure that I do not over load the class, but I do expect that the students complete their assignments on a daily basis, in an appropriate manner, and to the best of their ability.
To achieve success, students must complete their assignments and review their notes because new lessons are based on skills and materials taught in previous lessons. If a student does not have the working knowledge of the skills from the previous lesson they will have a great deal of difficulty grasping the concepts that will be taught in the new lesson. I am available for extra help during recess if your child needs help with an assignment. Please encourage your child to seek assistance when they need it. A student that takes ownership of his or her own work will be successful because they are driven and have a desire to do better.
Class Website: www.mrmacsclass.ca
Our class has its own website where I will post information updates, an online agenda, contact information, a class blog, and many interactive websites for your child to learn and benefit from. If your child is absent, they can get caught up quite easily through the website and I will make sure that they receive any resources and instruction they need to get back on track.
If you have any questions, or wish to speak with me at any time, please feel free to contact me through the website or call me at the school. Together, I believe that we can provide an excellent education for your child.
